Week of January 27th

Last week was a great week for most students! Let's have a even better week this week!!

In the 6th grade, students will review the skills of capitalization, punctuation, and sentence formation in conjunction with learning about compound and complex sentences. The aforementioned skills are necessary in order to deepen their learning of compound and complex sentences, and some students are not demonstrating these abilities even though we have studied theses skills. The extra work is needed before we begin to write our research papers at the end of the quarter. Good luck, 6th graders.

In the 7th grade, students will continue to read the novel, The Giver, by Lois Lowry. While reading the novel, students will journal with various prompts, study various vocabulary words, review and discuss the novel in literature circles, and demonstrate an understanding of comprehension on assessments, which they will have covering chapters 8- 14 this week. Good luck, students!!

In the 8th grade, students will finish their learning of adverbs, prepositions and prepositional phrases, conjunctions, and interjections with an assessment. Students have shown that they have these abilities with exercises from the textbook and the 8th Grade Grammar Workbook. Good luck, students!!

Let's have a great week! Achieving is Believing!!

MAP TESTING – This is week two of our second MAP testing session for this school year.

CHOIR PARENTS – On Monday, February 3, at 3:15 p.m., there will be a mandatory meeting in the school Library for parents of all Choir students who are planning to travel to New York City in June 2014 to perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall. Information will be given concerning the trip and payments needed, and Important decisions about the trip will be taken. We need at least one parent for each Choir student to attend this meeting.

SCHOLASTIC BOOKS! - This month your child(ren) will have the opportunity to purchase books through the International Scholastic Book Clubs.  This is an optional activity offered by the school, in case you want to motivate your child to read at home and to increase their own library.  With your purchase, our library will accumulate points to redeem for more books for the benefit of your children in our school. Order forms and catalogues were sent home on Friday. The final date to purchase the books online is February 10. The books will arrive at the school in one single delivery, and we will distribute them to the students according to their orders, approximately three weeks after the purchase due date. Please email Ms. Marilis (mzambrana@discoveryschool.edu.hn ) if you have any questions.

Week of MLK, Jr. Day!

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr., Day!!

I hope that everyone enjoyed their holiday and gave thanks and praise to the great man who provided it!!

All classes had a great week! Most of the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students performed extremely well, and I commend them for their ongoing efforts to partner with me in their education.

The 6th grade students, some who were late the first and second week of classes, will finalize their writings of their holiday vacations and recite them to the class ending the unit of their novel, Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls. Also, students will insure their understanding and knowledge of synonyms, antonyms, homographs, homonyms, and homophones by stating the differences of them and using them effectively in sentences.

The 7th grade students will demonstrate their comprehension and acting skills of their novel, The Giver, by Lois Lowry by acting out a selected chapter of it. Students, who are formed into literary circles, will showcase their abilities, along with their mates, and be assessed with rubrics. This should be fun!! Good luck, students!!
Also, students will receive another set of vocabulary words to review and journal with writing prompts for various chapters of the novel.

The 8th grade students will begin the week by reviewing adverbs, prepositions, and prepositional  phrases and deepen their knowledge about conjunctions. Students will demonstrate their learning using the textbook and worksheets from the workbook. Also, students will learn about interjections, identify them, and use them appropriately in a sentence.

Let's have a great week! Achieving is Believing!

Nothing in all the world is more dangerous than sincere ignorance and conscientious stupidity.

All classes had a nice week. We transitioned back into our school routines by writing about our holiday vacations. Most students were excited to write about them demonstrating their knowledge of the Writing Process and the 6+1 Traits and to recite them to the class.

This week, the 6th grade students will review the previous read chapters of their novel, Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls and later in the week, view the movie of the same name. Students should be able to compare/contrast the different genres and summarize the information in a short essay.

On Thursday of last week, the 7th grade students began reading their new novel, The Giver, by Lois Lowry. Students will demonstrate knowledge of journal writing, vocabulary, comprehension in Literature circles, and the author's purpose through the discussion of the themes of the novel. Students will further show those abilities as they act out a chapter of the novel they will select. Good luck, students!!

The 8th grade class will focus on the learning of adverbs early in the week. Adverbs are usually difficult for some students, but the 8th grade has shown a good working knowledge of them. We will close the week learning about prepositions and prepositional phrases and if time permits, conjunctions. All of these parts of speech will be learned with the help of the textbook and the 8th Grade Grammar Workbook.

Let's have a great week!! Achieving is Believing!!

NEW LATE WORK POLICY – To provide our students with consistency between the different grade levels, from Grade 4-12, the school has adopted a new policy for late work that goes into effect on January 7, 2014, as follows:

LATE WORK POLICY FOR GRADES 4-12

Beginning in January 2014, the following will be in effect for all students in Grades 4-12:

For Grades 6-12) To be regarded on time, work must be submitted to the teacher before 8:00 a.m. on the day that it is due.  This has proven to be effective in preventing students from copying homework from another student during the day.

For All Classes in Grades 4-12:

Due Date: 100% of grade (work must be complete and correctly done)
1 Day Late:  70% of grade
2 Days Late: 0 credit

Long-term Assignments (made at least 2 weeks in advance) are due the day of your return from an excused absence

Free Pass:  The teacher may give each student one late pass per quarter, at the teacher's discretion. This would allow for the work to be turned in 1 day late (complete and correctly done) for full credit. If the assignment is 2 days late, it would receive 70% credit. If it is 3 days late, there would be no credit.

Mandatory Completion of Work:  In order to ensure that the student does not miss essential knowledge and skills, the teacher may require that the student complete an assignment even if s/he will receive no credit.

Excused Absence:  One day to submit make-up work is allowed for each day that was missed. If turned in after that period of time, the above guidelines apply.

If you have any questions, please discuss these with the Area Administrators or with your student’s teachers.
